When to visit Japan, depending on what you want to see

Quand partir au Japon selon ce que vous voulez voir

Cherry blossoms, red maples or summer festivals: each season changes the trip completely. Here's how to choose.

Japan changes character with every season, and choosing when to go matters as much as the itinerary itself. There is no single "best time": there is the time that matches what you came to see.

From late March to early April is cherry blossom season (sakura). Tokyo and Kyoto become the most sought-after cities of the year: accommodation books up early, and the best-known parks are packed from the first weekend of bloom. The blossom front moves from south to north over about a month, which leaves some flexibility if your dates aren't fixed.

Autumn, from mid-November to early December, offers the equivalent in maple colour (momiji): Kyoto's temples surrounded by red and orange, with somewhat lighter crowds than in spring and more comfortable temperatures for walking all day.

Summer (July–August) is hot and humid, with a rainy season that usually ends by mid-July depending on the region. It is, however, the season of the great traditional festivals (matsuri) and fireworks — a different angle on the trip.

Winter, from December to February, suits an itinerary focused on nature and winter sports in the north (Hokkaido), with dry air and often clear skies in central Japan.

For a first tour combining Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka, spring or autumn remain the most balanced choices between weather, light and crowds.
